Long Talk

Native goes Web: Create powerful browser apps with WebAssembly

Description

A practical coverage of WebAssembly and its development ecosystem will give you the essentials you need for making informed decisions whether and how this technology can empower your projects.

WebAssembly, which has been nominated "Proposed Recommendation" – shortly before becoming W3C standard, enables Web and Native software developers to collaborate on feature rich web applications by executing WASM modules, a binary code interfacing with Javascript. This development has been made possible by a historical consensus between Google, Microsoft, Apple and Mozilla.

I will show you how U-NEXT embraced WebAssembly early on in order to build a new service. For understanding its technological impact in web development, it is also essential to know its architecture, which I will cover as well as a short take on the history of native code execution in browsers.

Speaker

Ziad Jabri is Principal Engineer at U-NEXT, where he is Web developer, Scrum Master and DevOps expert. He designed and implemented a solution for streaming books in web browsers using asm.js and WebAssembly, which has been released with their book service renewal rollout in March 2019.

In the first half of his now more than 2 decades of software development career he had been programming native PC applications and device drivers in x86 Assembler, C++ and C#. His interest in computer architecture and machine language originated during his high school years from hacking on the Atari ST home computer, writing extensions for GEMDOS in Assembler and C.
