Talk 1: Scaling Software Development: Teams & Codebase

Description

Setup your environment, code, commit, push and deploy, simple like that. When you are working alone, on a small personal project. When the development team and the codebase start to grow, things need to change.

This talk is about the challenges of scaling software development, multiplying team size and system complexity, and some strategies to deal with them. Including but not limited to: team sizes, code organization, quality assurance and automation.

Speaker

Software engineer since 2011, originally from Brazil, but currently working in Tokyo at Mercari, Tutti is the manager of the Engineering Growth team, responsible for on-boarding and education programs and the career development framework for engineers, tech leads and engineering managers, as well as knowledge sharing activities among the engineering teams.

Tutti worked as a software engineer in 3 different parts of the world and companies of various sizes and cultures, from a 12-people startups to big corporations like Samsung and Bosch. Tutti is also a Director of Women Who Code Tokyo chapter, and on her free time she volunteers organizing events and managing the local community.

Talk 2: To pair or not to pair

Description

Pair programming is the most controversial element of Extreme programming in terms of team productivity. The speaker's team started full pair rotation from February 2019, and the team suffered but benefited. Sometimes, pair programming made more deliveries and everybody was happier, while sometimes the opposite. The speaker will share the stories about when to pair, when not to, and the whys.

This talk is an extended version for the conference talk in Women Who Code CONNECT Asia 2019 in Singapore.

Fangda is a full-stack software engineer, working in Indeed Inc. She is an active programming contest attendee as an individual coder, as well as the site lead for Women@Indeed and the co-founder for Tokyo’s developers community WebHack as a community leader.
